The new Familia has also passed Japan's new Side Collision Safety Standard and satisfies the requirements of the new European Collision Safety Standard. SRS airbags and SRS side airbags with a head protection function for both driver's seat and front passenger seat are available for most models. To achieve a world-class level of safety, the new Familia also incorporates the MAGMA* body with side impact bars being placed inside the front and rear doors and catchpins located on rear doors to minimize intrusion into the cabin during a collision from the side. The 4W-ABS is standard equipment for all models. The vehicle's handling stability and reliable braking system also contribute to superior driving safety. The elevated driver's position realizes a safer driving environment by affording a superb range of visibility. Vibration and noise levels have also been substantially reduced. A newly developed 1.5-liter engine with a Sequential Valve Timing (S-VT) mechanism, which is available in Japan, achieves increased output and torque as well as reduced fuel consumption and CO2 and NOx emissions. The Familia models are equipped with new engines developed to attain a high level of performance and excellent fuel economy, a newly developed automatic transaxle system with significantly smoother shifting, and an enhanced, high-performance chassis to ensure superb vehicle dynamics and comfort. This was made possible by a longer wheelbase, a more compact engine space and an innovative seat arrangement that can be reconfigured according to the numbers of passengers and volume of cargo. The new Familia has been shortened to enhance maneuverability, yet the cabin offers spaciousness normally associated with upper-class cars. In North America, only the sedan version is available. The new design concept is also evident in the configuration of the hood, the sides of the body, and the rear. Both types have distinctive front grilles with intricately-shaped headlights. The sedan is noted for its functionality. The S-wagon combines the maneuverability of a compact car with the versatility of a station wagon. The new-generation Familia is available in two body types: the S-wagon (323F) and sedan (323/Protege). These are also the first models developed under our new "Contrast in Harmony" design concept, which juxtaposes opposites such as straight lines and curves or light and shade, and was created to emphasize the distinctive identity of new Mazda vehicles. Introduced in Summer 1998, it further reinforces the direction of Mazda's product development by providing two models with distinctive character that are easy and fun to drive, and offers an innovative package noted for its versatility. The new, ninth-generation Familia, is more than a model change of a car whose predecessors in the past 35 years have achieved production of over 10 million units in Japan.
